May 3 Cold Wax Unleashed: Experiment, Layer , & Transform!
“Cold Wax Painting is not defined by subject matter nor the degree of realism or abstraction, Cold Wax Painting is unified by artists’ shared interest in experimentation, texture and the physicality of paint layers.” -Gamblin

Cold wax as a medium is different. She is a romantic medium. In developed work she dances well with acrylic, collage, oil, pastel, and sculpture. She can be many things to many partners. She is about losing and finding, revealing and building up, she is about creating history, distance, obfuscation and also clarity.
Curious about cold wax? Want to know what it is, how to use it, or how to incorporate it into your current work? While painting with oil and cold wax can be a distinct artistic style, cold wax is also an incredibly versatile medium that can be combined with other materials, applied to a variety of substrates, and expanded into techniques not commonly taught.
Join artist and Muses director Stacy Nixon for a deep dive into the possibilities of cold wax. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore innovative ways to use cold wax beyond the traditional "cold wax style" and discover how to incorporate it into your own unique practice—whether you work in painting, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, or mixed media.
Topics covered will include:
- Using cold wax in unexpected ways that go beyond conventional techniques
- Wax over photos- a fascinating way to add layers and depth
- Enhancing cold wax with additives
- Layering cold wax over various materials including oil paint, dry media, crayons, acrylics, and textured surfaces
- Exploring substrates
- Using cold wax as a finish for other work
Students will leave with an expanded understanding of cold wax and a wealth of new ideas to explore, bringing fresh energy to their creative practice. Whether you're new to cold wax or looking to push its boundaries, this workshop will open up exciting possibilities for your work!
